6 Common Formats for Card Breaks

Sports card break formats are different ways in which groups of collectors can buy and open sports card boxes or cases together, often facilitated by a host or a breaker. Here are some of the most common sports card break formats:

1. Random Team Breaks

Participants buy a spot in the break and are randomly assigned a team. The host then opens the box or case, and all the cards for the assigned team go to the participant who was assigned that team. This format gives everyone an equal opportunity to be assigned a team with potential for high return.

2. Pick Your Team Breaks

Participants buy a spot in the break and choose the team they want before the box or case is opened. All cards for the chosen team go to the participant who picked that team. The price of each team is determined by a combination of factors including the market value of the cards that can be pulled from the break.

3. Random Player Breaks

Participants buy a spot in the break and are randomly assigned a player. The host then opens the box or case, and all cards for the assigned player go to the participant who was assigned that player. The breaker then opens the box or case, and all cards for the assigned player go to the participant who was assigned that player.

4. Divisional Breaks

Participants buy a spot in the break and are randomly assigned a division. The host then opens the box or case, and all cards for the teams in the assigned division go to the participant who was assigned that division. This format is most popular for NFL breaks, especially for rookie classes where the most desired players are equally distributed amongst different NFL divisions.

5. Hit Drafts

Participants buy a spot in the break, and the host opens the box or case. The participants then take turns selecting cards in a predetermined order, usually based on the number of spots purchased or randomized by the host. This format is popular for high end products with low number of cards.

6. Personal Box Breaks

A participant buys a whole box or case, and the host opens it for them live on a video stream.
